Duke University Emergency Status

A winter weather advisory remains in effect, with a cold weather advisory in place through 9 a.m. Monday.

Wind chills are expected to drop near zero and into the single digits overnight, and refreezing of any melt Sunday could lead to areas of black ice across central North Carolina. Snow accumulations will remain in place, and hazardous travel conditions are expected to persist, particularly as cold morning temperatures allow moisture and snow on roads, bridges and overpasses to freeze tonight.

Here are campus updates currently:

• All regular weekend bus routes except for the Weekend Circulator route are running according to regular schedules. Road conditions will continue to be monitored throughout the evening with every effort being made to keep the C1 route operating. Check Duke TransLoc for real-time service updates this evening and on Monday morning.

• All Campus Stores except the Duke North Gift Shop and the Bryan University Center Lobby Shop will be closed Monday because of the winter weather. The Duke North Gift Shop and Bryan University Center Lobby Shop both will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. See more information here.
• Study spaces in Rubenstein and von der Heyden will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (card access only). All other library spaces will be closed on Monday. See hours for details.
• Wilson and Brodie recreation facilities will be open from 9-11 a.m. on Monday. Check the Duke Rec website for updates tonight and on Monday.
• Duke University Chapel will be closed all day on Monday.
• Duke Gardens is closed until further notice due to the impacts of inclement winter weather.

Duke University, including the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing, will extend the severe weather and emergency conditions policy until midnight Monday. All in-person classes on Monday are canceled. Again, instructors may offer content remotely or substitute the class period with an assignment. Classes on Tuesday will be held as scheduled.

For Duke University Health System, the severe weather policy will end at 10 a.m. Monday. Based on geographic location, some clinics may need to adjust their opening time or remain closed. For details about the status of clinics, visit the Duke Health website.

Employees in “essential service” roles should report to or remain at work when the severe weather policy is in effect, and managers should notify staff and implement departmental severe weather plans as appropriate.

For safety reasons, the roof levels of all garages will remain closed on Monday. Bus routes will depend on weather conditions. Every effort will be made to continue the C-1, Swift, and hospital bus routes, depending on road conditions. Duke community members should monitor Duke TransLoc for real-time updates on transit routes.

Individuals traveling on or around campus should only use priority roads, walkways, and parking lots to reduce the possibility of injury due to slips and falls. An extreme cold warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday for all of central North Carolina, with dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero.

Due to campus road conditions, only the C1 route will begin service by 7:30 a.m. Road conditions will continue to be monitored for the Swift and Lancaster routes, with an anticipated delayed start at 10 a.m. The Weekend Circulator route will not run. Duke community members should monitor Duke Transloc throughout the day for real-time service updates.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Sunday as heavy snow continues across central North Carolina.

The National Weather Service expects an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow, with wind gusts up to 35 mph. A cold weather advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday, with wind chills as low as zero, followed by an extreme cold warning from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, when wind chills could drop to 5 below zero across all of central North Carolina.

Due to deteriorating campus road conditions, Duke transit will suspend service on the Swift and Lancaster routes by 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31. Every effort will be made to continue operating the C1 route but officials will continue to monitor road conditions for potential adjustments. Community members are asked to check real-time status on Duke TransLoc this evening and on Sunday, Feb. 1.

The severe weather and emergency conditions policy will be in effect from midnight Friday, Jan. 30, through midnight Sunday, Feb. 1.

As a result of expected hazardous conditions resulting from expected snow accumulation, Duke University and Duke University Health System will activate the severe weather and emergency conditions policy from midnight Friday, Jan. 30 through midnight Sunday, Feb. 1. A decision regarding extending the policy further will be made by Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 4 p.m. today through 7 a.m. Sunday with expectations for significant accumulations of snow and strong winds that will create low wind chills temperatures.

During times of severe weather, some staff positions require on-site presence to continue operations. All jobs should be assigned a service category by the manager to ensure continuous operations of patient care, student support and research functions. The three categories are:

•  Essential Service: during severe weather/emergency conditions, essential service staff report or remain at work.
• Reserve Service: during severe weather/emergency conditions, reserve service staff are assigned a status at the time of severe weather/emergency condition.
•  Delayed Service: during severe weather/emergency conditions, delayed service staff do not report to work or remain at work.

Duke crews have been pre-treating and applying brine to campus streets, outdoor stairways, walkways and entries to parking facilities. Crews will be on-site ready to respond during the weekend. Medical staff should avoid parking in surface lots throughout the weekend so that crews can safely remove snow. Access to all Medical Center garages (PG1, PG2, PG3, and Research Drive Garage) will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday with any parking permit.
