The severe weather policy for Duke University and Duke University Health System will be in effect as of 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, and will continue through noon Thursday. Classes will end today at 12:50 p.m. and are scheduled to resume Thursday at 11:45 a.m.

All Duke clinics will remain open with “Essential Service” personnel.

Communications are being distributed now, and Duke officials will continue to monitor weather forecasts and campus conditions throughout the evening and will communicate any updates about Thursday afternoon by tomorrow morning.

Current forecasts indicate that the winter storm is expected to begin in Durham with snow flurries at 10 a.m. today and snow accumulation beginning at 2 p.m. The snow is expected to transition to sleet and freezing rain late this afternoon, and conditions are expected to deteriorate after 5 p.m.

Crews have pretreated elevated walkways, primary sidewalks, ADA entrances and primary roads and parking lots, as well as entrances and approaches to parking garages. Members of the Duke community should only use priority roads, walkways and parking lots or garages during winter weather to reduce the potential for accidents and injuries.

All staff in “Essential Service” positions should report to work or remain at work. Gates on parking garages will be open for use by staff in “Essential Service” positions when the severe policy is in effect. All employees “Delayed Service” positions should not report to work or remain at work when the policy is in effect to allow for crews to clear parking lots and roads more effectively.

Ongoing updates about events and campus operations, including roads, parking lots, busing routes, dining facilities and Duke stores, will be posted on the DukeALERT website (http://emergency.duke.edu).
